IRB Study on Oxygen/Ozone Treatment for Head and Neck Infections

This multi-center study is being conducted for many reasons.

    1.       With the increasing list of antibiotic resistant bacteria another safe means of controlling oral-systemic infections is desperately needed.

    2.       People are living longer and retaining more teeth during their lifetimes. These aging individuals are also, regrettably, on multiple medications. Many of these medications cause dry mouth and other related side effects which compromise the health of the oral cavity. Therefore, safe, long term methods and protocols are needed to protect the teeth, gums, and jaw bones of our aging population. (Ask about our special mouth trays that we are studying to control recurrent decay and gum disease in this high caries susceptible population)

    3.       Dentists are now being faced with very serious complications from patients taking  medications          called bisphosphonates. These medications are taken for certain cancers, Paget’s disease, and osteopenia (low bone density). These serious complications are being called BON lesions or bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis. For a very descriptive and thorough description of bisphosphonates and these asscociated lesion please see www.ada.org/prof/resources/pubs/adanews/adanewsarticle.asp  www.ada.org/prof/resources/pubs/jada/reports/report_bisphosphonate.pdf JANUARY 2006 • www.jopasco.org (Ruggiero, S., Gralow, J., et al., “Practical Guidelines for the Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Osteonecrosis of the Jaw in Patients with Cancer,” Journal of Oncology Practice Vol. 2 Issue 1 pages 7-14)

       What is emerging from the initial treatment of these necrotic bone lesions is that they do not heal properly and they are more susceptible to secondary infections of all kinds. Surgical intervention many a times leads to larger lesions and thus we need to develop a treatment protocol that is not based on surgical intervention that will allow for the following;

    1.      Locally and systemically increasing of blood flow to these necrotic areas

    2.      Killing of primary and secondary infections from bacteria, viruses, etc..without increased possibility of producing more antibiotic resistant strains of these pathogens

    3.      Pain relief

    4.      Cleansing of these areas to allow healing.

Medical Ozone/oxygen can accomplish all of the above. This study is compiling information on the efficacy of Medical Ozone/oxygen to accomplish the healing of these oseotonecrotic lesions and other types of head and neck infections. Please look at the aforementioned  websites and their references for a list of these bisphosphonate drugs and these associated health complications. Please  understand that right now only a small percentage of individuals on these on these drugs are developing osteonecrosis of the jaw after dental work; especially extractions. However, if you are one of the unfortunate patients who does develop these lesions then percentages are meaningless.  The only thing that matters is healing the lesions and that is ultimately what part of this study is about.

    Ozone

    1.      Dipolar molecule of 3 oxygen atoms.

    2.      The form of oxygen that is formed by an electric discharge field of a corona discharge generator (simulates lightening).

    3.      Oxygen is one of the only gas that can accept and carry an electrical charge.

    4.      It protects living organisms by surrounding the earth at altitudes of 50,000-100,000 feet and absorbs the sun’s ultraviolet (200-300 nm range) rays  and this allows the survival of plant and animal life on earth.

    5.      Ozone is formed near ground level by the reaction of ultraviolet light with hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur compounds (etc.) to produce a photo chemical smog. BUT ozone is not the CAUSE of the smog-it is a byproduct of it. It is a powerful oxidizer and actually helps clean the atmosphere of  dangerous compounds.

                                   Brief History of Ozone

    1.       In 1785, Van Mauran reports a distinctive odor.

    2.      In 1840, it was discovered by German chemist C.F. Schonbein. He named the gas, ‘Ozein’, which is Greek for ‘smell’.

    3.      In 1856, it was used to disinfect operating rooms.

    4.      In 1860, Monaco first used it in water treatment plants.

    5.      In 1901,  it was used by Wiesbaden in a municipal water supply.

    6.      **In 1931, Dr. Otto Warburg wins his first Nobel Prize for work proving that cancer is caused by a lack of oxygen in the cells. He states in, “The Prime Cause and Prevention of Cancer”, that the cause of cancer is no longer a mystery, we know it occurs whenever any cell is denied 60% of its oxygen requirement. This occurs through a buildup of pollution or toxicity within and around the cell which blocks and then damages the cellular oxygen respiration mechanisms.

    7.      In 1932, Dr. E.A. Fisch, a dentist, used ozonated water for dental procedures and pioneered its use in medicine.

    8.      In 1932, Dr. E. Payr, a surgeon, was a patient of Dr. Fisch’s and became interested in ozone.

    9.      In 1935,, Dr. E. Payr published a 290 page book; “On Treatment with Ozone in Surgery”.

    10. In 1942, Dr. Gordon published his book, “Gordon’s Detoxification and Hydro Surgery Theory and Practice”, covering the medical uses of ozone as a colon cleanser.

    11. **In 1944, Dr. Otto Warburg wins his second Nobel Prize for his work linking cancer to damaged cell respiration due to a lack of oxygen at the cellular level.

    12.  In 1945, Dr. E. Payr injects ozone intravenously to treat circulatory problems.

    13.  In 1952, the National Cancer Institute verified Dr. Otto Warburg’s findings regarding lack of oxygen being the cause of cancer.

    14.  In 1954, Frank Totney published, “Oxygen: Master of Cancer”.

    15.  In 1956, Dr. Warburg published, “On the Origin of Cancer Cells”, in Science, 24, February 1956, Vol. 123, Num. 3191.

    16. In 1961, the Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology stated: “During the 80 year history of the large scale usage of ozone, there has NEVER been a human death attributed to it.”

    17. In 1972, The International Association for Oxygen Therapy was founded by Dr. George Freibott as the successor to the Eastern Association for Oxygen Therapy of 1913.

    18. In 1983, the first International Ozone Association medical ozone conference was held in Washington, D.C.. The abstracts were published in the book, “Medical Applications of Ozone”, compiled and edited by Julius Laraus.

    19.  Today after 125 years of usage, ozone therapy is recognized in Germany, Italy, France, Russia, Romania, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Israel, Japan, Singapore, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, 4 Canadian provinces and 14 US States (Alaska, Washington, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Minnesota).(Pressman, Saul, DCh, “The Story of Ozone”, Plasmafire Intl., BC, Canada, 2001).

Biological Effects of Ozone In Vitro

    (outside human body)

    1.      A powerful oxidizer that kills bacteria, fungi, and viruses at lower concentrations than chlorine. (1 molecule of ozone= 3,000 to 10,000 molecules of chlorine and kills 3500 times faster)

    2.      It oxidizes phenolics, pesticides, and chemical manufacturing wastes  rapidly and without harmful residues.

Biological Effects of Ozone In Vivo

                     (inside human body)

    1.      Increases cellular metabolism (more ATP).

    2.      Forms reactive oxygen species (hydrogen peroxide).

    3.      Activates antioxidative enzymes.

    4.      Activates RBC metabolism.

    5.      Leads to charge modification and improved flexibility of RBC membranes.

    6.      Destroys old RBCs.

    7.      Increases Nitric Oxide and blood circulation.

    8.      Inactivates 63 bacteria (salmonella, shigella, vibrio, legionella), 15 viruses (polio, coxsackie), 25 fungi and mold spores (aspergillus, penicillium), 13 fungal pathogens (zhiropus), and encysted protozoa (giardia).

    9.      Stimulation/proliferation of chondrocytes.

    10.    Ozone is produced by antibodies during the inflammatory process to kill bacteria. (The Scripps Research Institute, Nov. 18, 2002, Lerner, Wentworth, et al., Science.).
